Marriage for me is

March 12, 2009

1. Marriage is a total commitment to the well-being and wholeness of the other. It does not say "I love you if"; Insteadm it says "I will love you even if."

2. Marriage does not hold back anything. The lover’s love does not depend on the beloved’s growing or changing; it is a commitment to love even when the beloved falls.

3. When we get married we take on a partner not just for the fulfillment of our own personal needs, but more importantly to attain our own growth by loving another. This is grwoth to full personhood.

4. You can expect pain and difficulties to be part and parcel of your marriage, yet it is in working through the difficult times in our lives that we can begin to expand and grow and experience life more fully.

5. When a couple views difficulties as challenges for change and growth rather than as reasons to blame the other or to stay adamantly stuck in each other’s belief or positon, then marriage would have been truly a pat to the wholeness and fullness of life.

How about you? What is marriage for you?
